Invitation for

World Day Against Child Labour 2019

We all agree that Children should not work in danger, but on dreams. Yet today, 152 million children are still in child labour. Child labour occurs in almost all sectors in our economy, 7 out of every 10 children are working in agriculture and they deprive opportunity to go to school, they deprive opportunity to make their dream come true.

This year, the World Day Against Child Labour we will look back on progress achieved over the last two decades our joint efforts to tackling child labour and indeed forced labour in Myanmar. 2019 is also marks 20 years anniversary of the adoption of the ILO’s Convention 182 on Worst Forms of Child Labour in 1999 in the International Labour Conference. Myanmar ratified this Convention in 2013; a year after the reform process started in 2012. Ever since the ratification, Myanmar has opened the door to learn new standards of practice with a view to be able to address child labour in all its forms. It has adopted the national action plan to eradicate child labour in 2018. Though the road towards the eradication will be long, we believe Myanmar marked a good start of this effort, and as such the road will not be too winding or too lonely. Together we can achieve more.

We made it to 2019 and will continue to make it again and again in many more years to come. This year we wish to celebrate the World Day Against Child Labour by calling for the full ratification and implementation of the ILO’s Minimum Age for Admission to Employment Convention, 1973 (No. 138). We also encourage ratification of the Protocol of 2014 on Forced Labour, which protects all forms of forced labour for both adults and children.

In light of the above, we cordially invite you or your representatives to join us in this very important event to mark our efforts and achievement in protecting children of Myanmar, to make our best efforts to support them in their aspiration to make their dreams come true, and stop wasting their lives or health in unacceptable forms of works. The cerebration will take place on 12th June 2019 from 09:00 AM to 03:30 PM in Pathein City Hall, Pathein Township, Ayeyarwady region.
